THE OCEAN WATER IS SO BLUE
AND THE WAVES ARE WHITE
A LIGHT BREEZE IS SOFT AGAINST MY FACE.
WHILE THE WARM SUN GLISTENS ON THE WATER
SAND FEELS COOL ON MY FEET.
PEOPLE ARE TALKING AND LAUGHING
AND THE WORRIES OF THE WORLD ARE FAR AWAY
A SURFER ANXIOUSLY AWAITS FOR THE BIG WAVE
WHILE THE BIRDS STOOP DOWN FOR THEIR PREY.
I SIT ON THE PIER TO FEEL THE WIND BLOW
MY HAIR IS A MESS AND MY FACE IS BURNT.
I WATCH AS THE LITTLE KID
GETS IN THE WATER FOR THE FIRST TIME,
A LITTLE BOY GETS EXCITED OVER CATCHING A FLOUNDER.
I SMILE AT THEIR ENJOYMENT.
THE DOLPHINS PUT ON A SHOW FOR US ALL
AND THE SHARKS QUICKLY DRAW A CROWD.
AND THE NIGHT IS JUST AS BEAUTIFUL
AS FIREWORKS GLOW IN THE SKY.
I ENJOY TELLING MY LIFE STORY TO A COMPLETE STRANGER,
I TAKE MY SLOW WALK BACK TO MY ROOM
AND LISTEN TO THE MUSIC AND THE PEOPLE ALL AROUND
THE WEEK IS DRAWING TO AN END, AND SOON I MUST LEAVE
BUT I GOD'S PRESENCE HERE AND CAN'T WAIT TO RETURN.
well, 7 years ago when I wrote this it seemed brilliant. I was hoping to return to that very beach this year but life had other plans. It's been 7 years since I drove to Garden City Beach, SC to flee from a very stressful divorce and wash all of my worries away in the waves. I took a book "I kissed dating goodbye" and it opened my eyes to some of the red flags I completely overlooked while dating Mr. Wonderful who became my husband. I also liked how misleading the title was. It was really a great love story from an ultra conservative couple who I could never imitate :)
The memory of that beach trip is so clear to me, as if it were yesterday. My sister called me on the 3rd day to make sure I was still alive. I was drinking and flirted with a bouncer at the bar. LOL. I told that bouncer my life story. Looking back, he was patient to deal with me. He was probably just making sure that I wouldn't make a terrible drunken mistake of jumping over the pier. I really enjoyed flirting with the fisherman. I wanted to buy a t-shirt but they were all too tight (and I was skinnier back then). Those darn boobs get me every time :)
